Specimen Summary

This specimen comprises thin, alternating beds of siltstone and fine-grained sandstone, displaying the classic laminated fabric of distal turbidite or shallow-marine clastic deposition. The rhythmic bedding reflects repeated pulses of sedimentation, with coarser sand layers settling from higher-energy flows and finer silt layers accumulating during waning flow conditions. Assigned to the Red Rose Formation of the Skeena Group, these strata are mapped as Lower Cretaceous in age (denoted by the unit code lKSRs), indicating deposition during the early part of the Cretaceous Period (~145–100 Ma). In western Canada, the Skeena Group is known for marine to marginal-marine sedimentary rocks, including sandstone, siltstone, shale, and minor coal, often deposited in forearc or basin settings associated with Cordilleran tectonics. The thin-bedded architecture suggests deposition in a relatively low-energy, distal setting—possibly the outer shelf, slope, or basin floor—where fine clastics settled from suspension or low-density turbidity currents.
