We Are Creating a Buzz about Earth Science in British Columbia!
Below BC is a new non-profit society created in 2015 with a quest to bring geology and the broader earth sciences alive for the public through education and a variety of media.
Quite simply, we are a group of professional rockhounds and storytellers who want to share our love of geology and earth sciences in a way that will encourage the public to step outside – into our amazing province – and learn what is under the ground we walk on.
In 2016, we have set our sights on developing informative and fun online resources that are accessible to everyone. Check out our activities and goals section for more information on what we are up to and what we hope to accomplish this year.
What Is Below BC?
Below BC is a non-profit society created in 2015 on a quest to bring geology and the broader earth sciences alive for the public through education and a variety of media.
We are a group of professional rock-hounds and storytellers sharing our love of geology and the earth sciences in a way that will encourage the public and inspire them to step outside, into our amazing province, and learn what is under the ground we walk on.
Below BC works with a great volunteer base and series of sponsors so we can continue to provide content and preserve our geological history.
Number of face-to-face interactions with the public about earth science, geology and mining (since Jan 2018)
Number of specimens photographed and accessioned into our online digital museum
Number of kilometers driven around British Columbia to visit sites and perform heritage work and outreach
MAKING GEOLOGY ACCESSIBLE
The core mission of Below BC has been to excite the public about what lies under our feet! The earth is a dynamic system that we rely upon every day and is full of wonders. By using a creative range of technology alongside outreach events, we are bringing these treasures right to your computer.
We travel the Province – and beyond – to curate a digital collection of rocks, minerals, fossils and heritage specimens from numerous locations, museums and private collections, preserving important data that might otherwise be lost to time. Below BC aims to be the premier source of educational geological material in Canada.
Assisting Educators
Our latest project is to produce online educational resources that can be utilized by educators teaching students at a variety of levels, including universities and technical institutions.
Modules will be created by those working in the geological sciences and made available for general use. Online information will capitalize on our vast and growing inventory of digital specimens and virtual site tours. We will provide experiences that allow students to study a wide variety of geological scenarios from across the Province all from the ease of a computer.
We are currently working on a pilot project in conjunction with the Center for Training Excellence in Mining and the Smithers Exploration Group. This pilot project is due to be completed in June 2020.
