Concretion

Virtual Museum ID: 19-KM5

Specimen Summary

A concretion is a hard, compact, rounded mass that formed within a rock from the precipitation of minerals around a nucleus(center), often organic such as a leaf, shell, bone or fossil. This precipitation occurs in the pores of a sedimentary or fragmental volcanic rock usually of a different composition than the host rock where it is found. Concretion represents cementing material, such as silica, calcite, dolomite, iron oxide, pyrite, or gypsum and it ranges in diameter from small pebble size object to 3m wide boulders.
