Miners helmet used to protect a miners head from injury due to falling objects/low ceilings in tunnels and to provide hands free light
Interestingly, before hard hats were used, miners used soft caps that simply held their light in place but offered no protection. The light here is a carbide lamp that ran on acetylene gas.
